Textbook Savings Tips
Make Sure That You Get the Right Textbooks at the Best Price in Time for the First Day of Class
ISBN Matters: Many books have the same title and many authors have the same name. The best way to ensure that you get the exact book you need is by searching by ISBN. This number is unique to that particular edition of that title by that author. Some books have 10-digit ISBNs, others have 13 digits. No worries, CampusBooks.com search engine can handle both.
Beware of Older and Alternate Editions: Older editions and alternative printings such as international editions or instructors' versions or copies without the access card or CD-ROM can save you big money, but they may not be exactly what you need. If you're not sure if that 8th edition of your chemistry textbook will do when your prof assigned the new 9th edition, consult your professor before purchasing.
Check Access Codes: Textbook access codes are a series of letters and/or numbers that enables you to access additional online content and/or study material. Access codes can only be used once, so if you buy a used textbook than you should take care that your instructor doesn’t require material that can only be gained through the access code. If your course requires an access code, then you should buy a new textbook or rent the book.
Smart Shoppers Factor Shipping Time: Don’t forget about shipping times. Rome wasn’t built in a day, and chances are your textbook won’t be delivered in a day either. If you need the book ASAP, consider an eBook available for instant download. If you can wait a couple of days, many sellers offer expedited or rush shipping for an additional fee. Standard shipping can take 5 or more business days but is usually free or cheap. The cheapest shipping option is USPS media mail, but if you use media mail you might not get your book until classes are well underway. Also try to use a physical address as your shipping address, as many carriers don’t deliver bulky packages to PO boxes. CampusBooks.com includes shipping time and costs to make it easy for you.
Buy Off Season: Did you know that textbook prices drop dramatically before or after rush? As your economics professor taught you, it’s simple supply and demand. If everyone is buying textbooks at the same time, demand is high and prices are too. If you can find out beforehand from your professor what books you need, you can save a bundle buying off season. For example, if you know what classes you are taking in January and you can buy your textbooks in December when everyone else is selling theirs, then you my friend will be getting rock-bottom prices. If you then wait until August to sell your used textbooks, you will get top dollar for your used books and you might even break even, or possibly make money on your textbooks. Sometimes it pays to go against the herd.
